Design in Context

Bareneed Studios offers artists a quiet retreat from city life as well as an opportunity to slow down, focus, and draw inspiration from the raw, natural beauty of Bareneed on Newfoundland’s Port de Grave peninsula.

Set along the rugged shoreline of this small coastal community, the residency is truly distinctive, as few structures in the province stand so close to the ocean. Its character is defined by a rustic charm and striking bay windows that frame sweeping views of the water, creating a space that sparks curiosity, reflection, and creative energy.

Two Centuries of History & Counting

Once an abandoned 19th-century general store overlooking the rugged coastline of Bareneed, this structure has been carefully reimagined as a contemporary artist retreat without losing its original identity.

Rebuilt from the ground up, the project required a deliberate balance between preservation and performance. The original beach rock foundation was retained and reinforced, while existing rough-hewn timber members were restored and integrated into a newly engineered structure. Every intervention was approached with restraint, ensuring the building’s historic character remained legible while meeting modern standards of durability and use.

Heritage restoration is Sable’s specialty.

We love the challenge and intrigue of cultivating heritage spaces informed by modern building techniques and materials.

Whether you’re planning a new build, exploring design ideas, or ready to get started, our team is here to guide you through the process from concept to completion.
